Clear as Mud: Finding Clarity When Life Feels Murky”

Clear as Mud: Finding Clarity When Life Feels Murky”

Clarity is one of those words we throw around as if everyone knows what it means. Yet so often, life feels anything but clear. Sometimes it feels more like wading through mud, thick, dark, and hard to see through. As I say in my podcast, “Mud is dark. It is thick. It is not going anywhere.” And many people live their lives exactly like that: moving forward, but only able to see what’s right in front of their face.

I’ve been thinking a lot about clarity lately, how we find it, how we lose it, and how differently each of us processes it. Someone recently asked me what clarity means to me, and it made me pause. I’m a storyteller. I weave things around. I talk things out. I process externally. Some people want bullet points and straight lines. I tend to work in wide arcs and open‑plan thinking. But that doesn’t mean I’m unclear. It just means I get there differently.

Clarity vs Certainty — They are not the same

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is believing clarity will give them certainty. It won’t. Certainty is incredibly limited. I say in my podcast, “We don’t really have full certainty… we don’t know what the next five minutes is going to bring.” You can be clear on your direction without being certain of the outcome.

Clarity is knowing the direction you want to head. Certainty is knowing exactly how it will unfold.

One is possible. The other rarely is.

How we each find clarity

Over the years, from welding workshops to sales roles to two decades in the audio‑visual and security industry, I’ve learned that people find clarity in very different ways.

Some need everything laid out on the table before they begin. Some need to start moving and figure it out as they go.

I’ve worked with people who won’t install a new product until they’ve mocked it up at home first. My clarity came from turning up on site, opening the box, and getting stuck in. Neither way is wrong. They’re simply different.

Understanding your way of processing is one of the most powerful things you can learn. When you know how you think, how you communicate, and how you work, clarity becomes far easier to reach.

Why people get stuck

Most people aren’t stuck because they lack ability. They’re stuck because they lack clarity.

They’re walking forward but don’t know the destination. They’re trying to make decisions without knowing what they truly want. They’re comparing themselves to how others do things and assuming that’s how they “should” do it too.

But you’re not them. Your strengths, your wiring, your way of thinking, they’re unique. And when you understand them, you stop forcing yourself into someone else’s mould.

Clarity comes from conversation

Talking things out is one of the fastest ways to get unstuck. Whether you’re a verbal processor like me or someone who needs help pulling scattered ideas into bullet points, having someone alongside you makes a huge difference.

Sometimes you just need a one‑off clarity session to work through a specific decision. Sometimes you need deeper coaching to understand your personality, your wiring, and your long‑term direction.

Either way, clarity is possible, even if certainty isn’t.

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next step, I’m here. Let’s talk it through, work it out, and help you move forward with confidence and direction.
