The Quiet Loneliness of Small Business (And Why It Doesn’t Have to Stay That Way)
If you’re a small business owner, self‑employed, or someone carrying the weight of “figuring it out” on your own, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I say this: business can be lonely.
Not because you don’t have people around you. Not because you don’t have friends, family, or even staff. But because the responsibility sits on your shoulders. The decisions, the ideas, the pressure, the uncertainty — it all lands with you. And when you’re trying to work through things in your own head, it’s easy to feel stuck, frustrated, or like you’re going in circles.
I’ve been self‑employed for over 20 years. I’ve lived through the ups and downs, the good seasons and the tough ones, the moments where everything flows and the moments where nothing seems to move. And through all of it, the biggest challenge wasn’t the work, it was the loneliness of carrying it alone.
You can talk to other business owners, but they’ve got their own battles. You can talk to family, but they don’t always understand the pressure. And sometimes you just need someone who gets it, someone who understands business, understands life, and can sit with you in the middle of it without judgement.
That’s one of the reasons I stepped into life coaching.
Because I realised that what many small business owners need isn’t another marketing plan or spreadsheet. Sometimes you just need a sounding board, someone who can help you process what’s going on in your head, understand your personality, and figure out why certain things feel heavy or hard.
For example, I learned late in my business journey that I don’t enjoy marketing because I’m not an “ideas guy.” I’m not someone who wakes up with fresh content pouring out of me. I’m a storyteller. I communicate through conversation, not bullet points. Understanding that changed everything for me — not because the work changed, but because I understood myself better.
And that’s what coaching offers: A place to talk things out. A place to dump the thoughts you can’t say to your partner without stressing them out. A place to explore ideas without someone shutting them down. A place to understand your personality, your strengths, and the way you naturally work.
When you speak things out loud, you start to hear what’s really going on. You start to see what’s holding you back. You start to recognise what you actually want and what you don’t.
And when you’re working in your strengths, you don’t just make progress… you find joy again.
If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or unsure where to go next, or if you simply need someone to thrash out ideas with, that’s what I’m here for. No pressure. No judgement. Just genuine conversation to help you find clarity, direction, and purpose.

I’ve been having some really honest conversations lately about purpose, pressure, and what it means to move forward when life feels messy. If that’s where you’re at, this podcast might meet you right where you are. Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/5t4BeWBEcEOd4qaQCRzbhH?si=513bba4097e0490f
